Do you need to register for VAT?

Two numbers decide it: what you have supplied over the last twelve months, and what you expect to supply in the next thirty days. Put them in below and you will know where you stand, and how long you have to act.

AED
Everything you charged at 5% or 0%, plus imports. Exempt supplies do not count.
AED
A single large contract can put you over on its own. Include anything already signed.
AED
Only matters for voluntary registration — spend alone can qualify you.
If you already hold a TRN, this tells you whether you could deregister instead.
Enter your figures above and the answer appears here.

The two thresholds, plainly

MandatoryAED 375,000

If your taxable supplies and imports exceeded this over the previous twelve months, or you expect them to exceed it in the next thirty days, you must register. It is not optional and it is not based on profit.

VoluntaryAED 187,500

Above this you may register if you want to. Unusually, your taxable expenses count toward this one as well as your supplies — so a business that spends heavily but sells little can still qualify.

Both tests look backwards over a rolling twelve months and forwards over thirty days. The rolling part is what catches people out: a business that was comfortably under the line in January can be over it by August without any single month feeling unusual.

What actually counts

  • Standard-rated supplies — everything you sell at 5%.
  • Zero-rated supplies — exports, certain healthcare and education, and qualifying international transport. They are taxable at 0%, which is not the same as exempt, and they do count toward the threshold.
  • Imports of goods and services where you account for the tax yourself under the reverse charge.
  • Exempt supplies do not count — including certain financial services, bare land, local passenger transport, and residential property after its first supply.

The distinction between zero-rated and exempt is where most self-assessments go wrong, and it goes wrong in both directions. If a meaningful part of your revenue sits in either bucket, the calculator above gives you a shape rather than an answer, and it is worth half an hour with someone who will look at your actual invoices.

Once you are liable, the clock is short

A business that becomes required to register has 30 days to submit its application through EmaraTax. The obligation starts on the day you cross the threshold, not the day you notice you crossed it, and the Federal Tax Authority will backdate your registration accordingly. That matters, because you are treated as having been registered from that date — so supplies you made in the meantime were taxable supplies, whether or not you charged VAT on them.

Late registration carries an administrative penalty of AED 10,000. The bigger cost is usually the VAT you should have charged and did not, which you will still owe even though your customer has long since paid the invoice.

Common questions

Does the threshold apply per company or per owner?

Per taxable person. If you own several companies, each is normally assessed on its own — but related parties conducting a single business can be treated together, and the Authority does look at arrangements that appear designed to keep each entity under the line.

I am in a free zone. Do these thresholds apply to me?

Yes. Free zone status affects corporate tax and, in some Designated Zones, how VAT applies to goods — it does not exempt you from VAT registration. Free zone companies cross the same AED 375,000 line as everyone else.

My revenue spiked once and has dropped since. Am I still liable?

If the rolling twelve-month figure went over AED 375,000, the obligation was triggered at that point. Registration may still be required, and deregistration is a separate application with its own conditions and its own deadline. Do not simply ignore it because the number came back down.

Should I register voluntarily to look bigger than I am?

It is a real reason and a common one — a TRN reads as an established business to corporate buyers, and some procurement teams will not onboard a supplier without one. Weigh it against the compliance load: returns every period, records to keep, and penalties that start at AED 1,000 the day you file late.

Not sure your numbers are the right numbers?

Send us your last twelve months of invoices on WhatsApp and we will tell you where you actually stand — including the zero-rated and exempt split that this calculator has to take your word for. If registration is needed, we handle the application end to end.

Thresholds and timeframes on this page come from Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 on Value Added Tax and its Executive Regulation, and administrative penalties from Cabinet Decision No. 40 of 2017 and its amendments.
